The Short-Horned Lizard of Northern
Arizona
The Short-Horned Lizard of Northern Arizona,
or (Greater
Short-Horned Lizard - Phrynosoma hernandesi), is
one of the eight species of horned lizards that are
found within the continental US. It is known, and so
named, for its occipital and temporal horns on the head.
It has rows of lateral abdominal fringe scales and dorsal
scales. Color, and color patterns, vary greatly and
tend to match the color of the terrain in their local
environment. Read more about this unusual reptile at
the Digimorph
- Phrynosoma hernandesi (Short horned lizard) website.
